Modern China Modern China started with the revolution led by Dr. Sun Yet-san, who first promoted into China a new idealism of "Three Principles of the People", known as: Nationalism - free China from all foreign control Democracy - build a new democratic political system in China Socialism - better livelihood for all Chinese National Republican On October 10, 1911, a revolution broke out and caused Qing Dynasty collapsed. Dr. Sun Yet-sen eventually formed the party of Kuomintang and the first republican government in Nanjing He died on March 12, 1925 and Chiang Kai-shek succeeded him as the leader of the party and the National Republican Government. The Republican led by Chiang had not pursued "Three Principles of the People". Instead, all efforts had been directed to fight with the Chinese Communist Party, which was a partner in the revolution of 1911.At that time, Japan had started invasion in the Northern part of China. Chiang openly announced that the Republican would prefer to fight CCP first and ignored the national cry for full-scale war against Japanese invasion. The Republican's policy had caused most of the Chinese uneasy with the government. Even within the Republican, senior army leaders had come out to voice their objections. Many had thus jointed the CPP and formed a frontier to fight against Japanese in all fronts. After the defeat of Japan, with the full support of American government, the Republican was re-instated and made to control the major cities in China. Although America offered full financial and military support to the Republican, Chiang and his government was so corrupted and eventually defeated by poorly equipped Chinese Communist Army. In 1949, the Republican had to retreat to Taiwan and has been governing Taiwan for 50 years. Peoples' Republic of China On October 1, 1949, Peoples' Republic of China was established under the government of Chinese Communist Party. PRC at its early establishment had very close relationship with Soviet Union. The relationship was broken in 1952 when PRC found that USSR tried to assert control and interference to its governing of China. The West and Japan led by US tried to block PRC from the first day of its formation. PRC had to survive on its own and closed door for twenty years until US finally admitted in 1972 that PRC is the official governing body of China. During the first 30 years, PRC went through many hurdles, reforms and movements. In late 70, the open door and market reform becomes the official government policy. Since then, PRC had achieved remarkable economic growth with its GNP double every ten years in the last twenty years. China is now free from any control of foreign power. Chinese are contented with its economic development. Though there is democracy or human right movement against China, there is no basic support from majority of the Chinese. China has its own system and if there is any deficiency, Chinese will amend it accordingly. Any foreign interference will jeopardize the progress China has achieved. Any intend to affect the social stability will always cause uproar from Chinese people. |
